The project

Anello della Val Belluna

The idea

The idea of the “Ring of Val Belluna” bicycle touring route was born from a desire to introduce people to the area of the Piave River, enclosed between the Dolomiti Bellunesi and the Pre-Alps: a wide valley that has so much to offer in terms of landscape, biodiversity, history, architecture, art, traditions and local products. Slowness, Respect and Curiosity are the keys to get to know Val Belluna, interwoven with very low traffic roads ideal for cycling. And cycling allows you to fully experience the emotions and surprises of Val Belluna. The railway line, which connects Belluno and Feltre with three intermediate stations, also facilitates train-bicycle intermodality, a true flywheel for cycle tourism.

The Project

The cycling route was developed connecting existing bicycle paths and sections of low-traffic secondary roads.
Critical points, e.g., crossing of rivers and busy roads, were identified and reported to local governments in order to build the necessary infrastructures.

Public intervention

Over the years, numerous interventions and infrastructural works have been planned and implemented by local authorities along the Belluna Valley Ring to improve its practicability and safety. Among the main interventions are the careful work of recovery and arrangement of very low-traffic neighbourhood roads on the left side of the Piave River; the bicycle path over the Bribano bridge, the underpass at the Gravazze roundabout, and the two bicycle footbridges over the Vesès and Salmènega streams in the municipality of Santa Giustina; the railway overpass, the Prade-Marisiga street bicycle path, and the Salce San-Fermo bicycle path in the municipality of Belluno.

Promotion

Once the bycicle route was defined, it was necessary to make it known, and in the absence of a public initiative, FIAB Belluno got busy in many ways.

THE EVENT
From 2018 to 2022, on the occasion of European Mobility Week, the Grande Pedalata della Val Belluna was organized. It was a group bicycle touring event, with an average participation of 200 cyclists, which was sponsored by the Province of Belluno, the Bim Piave Belluno Consortium, the Belluno Dolomites National Park, and the municipalities of Val Belluna. Cycling the Belluna Valley Ring with an average of 200 cyclists made it possible to test its practicability, safety and attractiveness.

THE MAP
Despite the great development of digital media, paper maps are still very much appreciated and in demand. For this reason, FIAB Belluno printed a 1:50.000 scale map of the Belluna Valley Ring. which is available, free of charge, at the tourist offices in the Belluna Valley. The pdf version of the map can be downloaded from this website.

THE ROAD SIGNS
The route does not yet have consistent road signs. To make up for this deficiency, FIAB Belluno has arranged yellow sticky markers along the route. Each trail marker carries the QR code to download the trail.
