PANORAMIC RING

The spectacular route

The Belluna Valley Panoramic Ring

The route winds along the hillsides of the Bellunese Pre-Alps and the Bellunese and Feltrine Dolomites. It offers wide and spectacular views of the Piave Valley and the Dolomite peaks; it penetrates for long stretches into the forests that cover the northern slopes of the left side of the Piave; it crosses mid-mountain meadows and pastures, passes through ancient rural villages and the valley’s two main towns, Belluno and Feltre.

120 km long, with an elevation gain of about 3100 m, the route requires the support of a GPX track, given its length and winding nature. It takes place mostly on secondary, country and forest roads. It offers great stimulation and excitement to those who, with good legs and a suitable vehicle, prefer to ride away from the well-known and frequented routes and explore secluded and little-known natural territories.

Before setting off, it is a good idea to carefully assess the weather, the efficiency of the bicycle and the level of training, taking into account that, especially on the left side of the Piave River, one pedals for long stretches in valleys and lonely areas far from footholds.

Part 1

From Piazza dei Martiri in Belluno you climb, first on an asphalt road and then on a gravel surface, to an altitude of 950 m, near the Col de Gou locality. From there, with continuous ups and downs, you pass through Pian del Monte, cross the enchanting Tibolla valley and enter the beech forests of the Brenta valley, in the realm of deer and wolves. Of the former, one can hear the mighty howls in autumn, while the latter sweeps these valleys silent and watchful, hunting for prey.

Having crossed the wide and bright clearing of Pianezze and reached the provincial road of Passo San Boldo, the trail turns right to enter, on a forest road that is occasionally bumpy , the splendid and lonely Botte valley. Leaving the valley, back on the asphalt road, after some challenging ups and downs, you come in sight of Zumelle Castle, one of the few vestiges of medieval fortifications still present in Val Belluna.

Passing very steeply downhill the ancient church of San Donato, you go through some small rural villages and, following a dirt road in the open countryside of Lentiai, you reach Lake Busche. After the barrage, it is unfortunately necessary to travel almost 2 km on the state road to reach the intersection with Via Lipoi, which you take as you leave the traffic. You soon arrive at the gates of Feltre, immersed in the relaxing rural landscape that characterizes this area.

The first part of the hike ends in the scenic Piazza Maggiore, after 70 km and 1950 m of elevation gain.

Part 2

From Feltre you reach Pedavena by bicycle path. Travelling along a wide cultivated plain, you pass Foèn and Villabruna where you turn toward Grum. Continue, uphill along the southern foothills of Mt. S. Mauro, to Montagne at 550 m elevation. Montagne is a small, interesting settlement of rural houses with typical architecture characterized by the “Piòl,” located at the mouth of the Canzoi valley, one of the most unique gateways to the Belluno Dolomites National Park.

We leave val Canzoi in the direction of first Toschian and then Cesiominore to reach Cesiomaggiore, known for hosting two important museums: the Toni Bevilacqua Historical Bicycle Museum and the Dolomites Ethnographic Museum.

After a flat stretch of road of about 5 km, we arrive at San Gregorio; we go uphill past Roncoi to take, after a few kilometers, the narrow and steep hill that leads to the small village of Alconis.

Further on we are greeted by a fascinating territory rich in suggestions and legends, evoked by the “Masiere”, the small lake mirror of Vedana and the Vedana Charterhouse.

After having crossed the Cordevole River on a rope footbridge, we climb toward Bolago and Tisoi; after passing them, downhill, we reach Belluno, closing the second stage of the Belluna Valley Panoramic Ring after covering another 50 km and 1150 m of elevation gain.
